I had always set my heart on owning a Saint Bernard one day, although I actively show and own Golden Retrievers. After doing a lot of research, I decided that the Youngstead Kennel seemed the perfect choice. This was 10 years ago – and since then my husband and I are totally in love with this wonderful breed.

Kevin and Cathy sent us a bouncing puppy, Youngstead Pysces of Shamare. My husband is an airline captain, and our big boy had his journey in the cockpit of a 747 jumbo! I think he must have been the only dog in the world to have sat on a Captain’s seat! Needless to say, Clive fell in love with Hiriam as well. He was one of the most fantastic dogs we had the pleasure of owning. His magnificent head was one of his best features, and he took everyone’s breath away in the show ring. Hirry won his first Best in Show under Jean Peden at the age of 6 months! Since then he received many awards, and we made him up into a Champion not long afterwards.

We then decided to get a little girl, and after lots of negotiations with Kevin, our precious little Abigail arrived, but this time in the cargo hold!

Abigail is the most gentle, affectionate Saint we could ever wish for. We made her up into a Champion, and she was awarded her Good Canine Citizen Test under Doreen Powell. Abigail is involved with pet therapy work, and is a hit with the children at the orphanage who take great pleasure in putting ribbons on her ears!

I would like to thank Kevin and Cathy for being wonderful breeders. They are always there when you need help or advice – something many breeders are not. We have had the pleasure of staying with them, and seeing their Saints, as well as gaining experience in the show ring under Kevin’s guidance. The Youngstead Saints are the best bred Saint Bernards we have seen. We have travelled to Germany, Belgium and Switzerland – but our choice is always from the Youngstead stock!

We are looking forward to owning our 3rd Youngstead Saint Bernard in the not too distant future

Dear Kevin and Cathy

Our puppies, Zorro and ZuZu Kazoo, are now eighteen months – although they are really five days apart. They are, and have been, an absolute delight. I really must congratulate and thank you for breeding such magnificent dogs. They are each quite different in nature, but are the sweetest and happiest dogs we have ever had. From the moment we picked them up at the airport we could see that they were unstressed and ready to take on a new life with enthusiasm.

And that they have in abundance – we take them to class every Saturday, and they insist on greeting each new dog regardless of size!

When it comes to greeting visitors, they are also not shy, and we are particularly happy that they are so good with our grandchildren.

Kevin, thank you for the advice you have given us since we bought them, I always feel that we can contact you with any query.

Kind regards, and thank you again,

– Dee & John

i  have wanted a St. Bernard my whole life and I found Youngstead St. Bernard’s online. Kevin and Kathy Young have been incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. This was my first dog purchase and they very patiently answered all of my questions and have continued to provide me with great advice once I got my dog, Daisy.

I visited Youngstead in August to see the puppies, and based on my place on the waitlist, I was able to choose my own dog. I returned a week or so later to take Daisy home. She had been bathed and had had a last visit to the vet. In addition, Kathy advised me on proper care products and even picked some up for me. I have had a fabulous experience purchasing my dog from Youngstead and I give them my highest recommendation.

During 2006 we lost a family dog to cancer and while shopping for a replacement dog we came across a poster of a Saint Bernard, which we realized must have been the dominant breed in our old dog. We did a web search on Saint Bernard’s and found Youngstead Saint Bernard’s website and requested information on their dogs. Kevin responded with useful information on the breed, photos of the puppies he had as well as which dogs he was currently breeding with. After much email correspondence and scanned photos we purchased our first puppy from Kevin during 2006 and all our enquiries and negotiation were over the phone or via the internet as we live in a different city.

We were very pleased with the outcome, the puppy was flown to Durban and arrived in great condition and was very relaxed and fitted in immediately to our family environment. We are so happy with the breed and in particular with Youngstead Saint Bernard’s that we have since more recently bought a second dog from Kevin. We have found Kevin’s dogs to be relaxed, very well natured and obedient and we have enjoyed our dealings with Kevin, who has stayed in touch with us and provided us with a great deal of mentorship and understanding of the breed.
